Introduction
Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated as “rock and roll” in the United States in the 1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style which drew heavily on the genres of blues, rhythm and blues, and from country music. Rock music also drew influence from jazz, folk, and classical music.
The sound of rock was shaped by the electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, and vocals of the performers. Instruments such as the piano, Hammond organ, and saxophone were often used in larger rock ensembles. Guitarists generally played simple lead lines with a single note melody line or riff embellished by middle range chords or Farfisa organ parts. In contrast to earlier styles, which were often stripped-down or spare due to financial constraints on record companies or technology limitations such as the inability to use overdubs or multitrack recording techniques to add more sounds later on during post-production, rock bands often used creative instrumentation sounds to embellish their recordings. This included electric guitars played with feedback or wah pedals layering distorted guitars overclean rhythm tracks to create “thickened” textures by turning down their volume controls (a technique known as “power chords”); string quartets playing echoing riffs; keyboard players using Leslie speakers for swirly effects; sequencers playing basic electronic rhythms; drummers using electronic percussion pads for additional sounds; and singers using reverb or echo chambers for vocal texture enhancement.
The Birth of Rock

Rooted in skiffle, beat and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later experimented with several genres, ranging from pop ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock, often incorporating classical elements in innovative ways. In 1963, their enormous popularity first emerged as “Beatlemania”; as the group’s music grew in sophistication following their success with “I Want To Hold Your Hand” (1964), led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, the band were integral to pop music’s evolution into an art form and to the development of the counterculture of the 1960s.
The Rolling Stones and Glam Rock
Most people would not traditionally associate The Rolling Stones with Glam Rock, yet their album Some Girls is often credited as being one of the cornerstones of the genre. The Rolling Stones’ success with Some Girls led to a new wave of imitators, including such bands as Slade, Sweet, T. Rex, and Fastway.
American Rock Bands of the 1970s
The 1970s witnessed the birth of rock bands that would go on to define the genre and change the face of popular music. Some of these bands, such as Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith, are still making music today. Others, such as The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Punk Rock

Heavy Metal
The first thing you need to do is get the right instruments. You’ll need an electric guitar, a bass guitar, and a drum set. You might also want to get a keyboard or some other kind of auxiliary instrument. Once you have your instruments, you need to learn how to play them. If you don’t know how to play, you can either take some lessons or find someone who does and ask for help.
Now that you have your instruments and you know how to play them, it’s time to start writing your own songs! Start by coming up with a basic melody and chord progression. Once you have that, start adding in your own lyrics. If you’re not sure what to write about, try writing about something that’s important to you or something that’s been on your mind a lot lately.
