Introduction
The Madagascar franchise is a series of films, television shows, and other media featuring the characters from the 2005 film Madagascar. The franchise follows the adventures of four main protagonists: Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippopotamus.
The first film in the franchise, released in 2005, was simply titled Madagascar. It was followed by two sequels: Escape 2 Africa (2008) and Europe’s Most Wanted (2012). In addition to these three theatrical films, there have been several direct-to-video spin-offs, including Penguins of Madagascar (2014), which focus on the supporting character Skipper and his fellow penguins.

Characters
King Julien:
The self-proclaimed ruler of the lemurs, King Julien is a wise-cracking, party-loving monarch who is more interested in having a good time than ruling his kingdom. He’s also quite lazy, leaving most of the work to his trusted advisor Maurice. Despite all this, he’s a kind and goodhearted leader who cares deeply for his subjects.
Maurice:
Maurice is King Julien’s right-hand man and chief advisor. He’s a loyal friend who is always ready to help out, even though he often ends up getting dragged into Julien’s crazy schemes. He’s also the voice of reason among the group, trying to keep everyone calm when things get chaotic.
Mort:
Mort is a small mouse lemur who is madly in love with King Julien (much to Julien’s annoyance). He’s shy and meek, but he has a heart of gold and will do anything for those he loves.
Private:
Private is a young penguin recruit who joins Skipper’s team on their journey to find land. He’s eager to please and always follows orders, but he sometimes gets too nervous and messes up. However, he always manages to redeem himself in the end.
Plot
The movie Madagascar is set on the island of Madagascar, where a group of animals have escaped from the Central Park Zoo. The story follows their adventures as they try to find their way back to New York City. Along the way, they meet new friends and enemies, and discover that even though they’re different, they can still work together.

Reception
The movie Madagascar was very well received by critics and audiences alike. The movie earned over $527 million at the worldwide box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. The movie also won several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

The Academy Award for Best Animated Feature is given to the best animated film of the year. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa was nominated for this award in 2009, but lost to Pixar’s Up.
Film and stage adaptations
The 2005 film Madagascar was adapted into a stage musical in 2008, with the title Madagascar: A Musical Adventure. The show toured the United States and Canada, before opening on Broadway in 2012.
The musical follows the same basic plot as the film, with a few changes and additions. For example, Alex the lion is given more of a backstory, and his relationship with Marty the zebra is explored in more depth. Additionally, new songs are added to the score, such as ufffdBest Friendsufffd and ufffdI Like to Move Itufffd (which became a huge hit thanks to its inclusion in the movie).
Many of the original voice cast from the film returned to reprise their roles for the stage production, including Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, and Jada Pinkett Smith. The show was well-received by audiences and critics alike, winning several awards including Best Musical at both the Drama Desk Awards and Outer Critics Circle Awards.
