History of the Columbia Music Teachers Association
The Columbia Music Teachers Association (CMTA) was founded in 1891 by a group of music teachers in Howard County, Maryland. The CMTA is a non-profit organization that promotes the study and performance of music among its members and the community at large. The CMTA provides opportunities for its members to perform in public concerts, recitals, and competitions; to participate in workshops and master classes; and to receive discounts on musical instruments and supplies. In addition, the CMTA sponsors an annual conference which features lectures, performances, and clinics by renowned musicians from around the country.
The first president of the CMTA was William H. Stone (1840-1918), who served from 1891 until his death in 1918. Stone was a well-known composer and music teacher in Baltimore, Maryland. He also served as the first conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra from 1916 until 1918. Under Stone’s leadership, the CMTA grew rapidly in membership and reputation.
Today, the CMTA is one of the largest and most active music teachers organizations in Maryland. It continues to provide its members with opportunities to perform and learn, while also serving as an advocate for music education in the state of Maryland.
